Steel producer SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. said it would start operations of its Batangas industrial scale melt shop by 2024.
In a statement over the weekend, the company said the 600,000-ton plant, located in Lemery, Batangas, would use local scrap metal to produce high-grade billets for building and ports construction, shipbuilding, among other projects.
It said the plant would be the country’s first industrial scale melt shop.
SteelAsia president Benjamin Yao said the melt shop would formalize and organize the collection, consolidation and recycling of scrap metal throughout the country, creating a business sub-sector with opportunities for individuals and small businesses like junk shops alike.
The company said the melt shop would help the country save on dollars currently used to import billets, as well as generate business opportunities and thousands of jobs for the industry.
“This is part of the vision of SteelAsia to put in place an integrated steel industry, the backbone of a country’s industrial base,” Yao said.
SteelAsia said the melt shop would use the latest green technology of Tenova, a global leader in steel and mining technology to minimize the carbon footprint of the project.
It explained that Tenova’s Consteel Evolution technology saves energy, decarbonizes steel production, and reduces environmental impacts through efficient energy recovery and pollution control innovations.
“SteelAsia, the largest steel producer in the country, already has six operating plants and has lined up several more in a multi-billion-dollar plan to keep the country abreast of its neighbors,” Yao said.
SteelAsia broke ground on the Lemery facility in 2019.
The company said earlier the facility would create at least 1,500 direct jobs and thousands more from ancillary industries and businesses, once fully operational
It will also have an annual capacity of around 1.1 million tons of steel products used in infrastructure and heavy construction such as H/I beams, sheet piles, heavy angles and channels.
SteelAsia also operates plants in Davao, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Batangas and Bulacan.
