YTD U.S. Raw Steel Output Slumped, Says AISI

The most recent weekly production statistics suggests marginal decline in raw steel production by the country during the week ended on March 20th, 2021. The data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) points to nominal year-on-year decline in output during the week.

The domestic raw steel production during the week totalled 1.753 million net tons. The capability utilization rate during the week was 77.3%. This compares with the production and capability utilization rate of 1.741 million net tons and 75.3% respectively during the corresponding week a year before. Upon comparison with the week ended March 20th, 2020, the production was up by 0.7%.

The production for the week edged lower marginally by 0.5% from the prior week, when it had totalled only 1.761 million net tons. The capability utilization rate was 77.2% in the week ended March 13th, 2021.

The topmost producer was the Southern region, whose output totalled 724,000 net tons. The production by the other regions is as follows: Great Lakes (620,000 net tons), Midwest (184,000 net tons), North East (164,000 net tons) and Western (61,000 net tons).

The adjusted year-to-date production through March 20th, 2021 totalled 19.626 million net tons at an average capability utilization rate of 76.8%. This is down by almost 6.2%, upon comparison with the production of 20.917 million net tons during the same period a year before, when the capability utilization rate had averaged at 79.6%.
