ArcelorMittal, Air Liquide Partners to Boost Low-Carbon Steel Production

Luxembourg-based integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Air Liquide towards exploring innovative solutions to boost low-carbon steel production at its Dunkirk industrial basin. Both the companies will work together on solutions involving low-carbon hydrogen and CO2 capture technologies.

According to company press release, the project is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions from ArcelorMittal’s steelmaking facilities in the Dunkirk industrial basin by 2.85 million tonnes (Mt) by 2030. The companies aim to implement the project by using funding from European or French schemes. They have already applied for funding under the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme for hydrogen.

ArcelorMittal announced its readiness to implement an innovative production unit on its Dunkirk site, combining DRI and submerged arc furnace technologies in huge dimension. This will enable production of steel with lower carbon emissions. Air Liquide extended all support to the initiative by supplying low-carbon hydrogen and implementing carbon dioxide capture technologies.
