The South American crude steel output witnessed notable increase during the month of December 2020. The regional output edged higher substantially by 16.3% from 3.143 million tonnes (Mt) in December 2019 to 3.654 Mt in December this year.
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) production data indicates that Brazil’s output totalled 2.886 Mt, modestly higher by 17.2% when matched with 2.462 Mt in the same month a year before. Argentina- the second largest producer saw its steel output surge significantly by nearly 19% to 388,000 tonnes. In third place was Colombia, whose output was estimated at 110,000 tonnes. The other primary producers were Chile (105,000 tonnes), Peru (105,000 tonnes) and Ecuador (50,000 tonnes).
The output by Venezuela registered the biggest jump, surging higher by almost 316% from the previous year. On the contrary, the output by Uruguay declined the most, falling by nearly 7.2% year-on-year.
During the full year 2020, South American region produced 38.158 Mt of steel. This is significantly lower by 8.4% from the prior year production of 41.656 Mt. The top five crude steel producing countries in 2020 were Brazil (30.971 Mt), Argentina (3.651 Mt), Chile (1.165 Mt), Colombia (1.126 Mt) and Peru (671,000 tonnes).
