Iranian exports slow decline but remain down: ISPA

Iranian steel exports fell -17% on-year in the nine months through 20 December to 6.46 million tonnes, the Iranian Steel Producers’ Association (ISPA) says on its online Chilan portal. Although the rate of decline has slowed from previous months, the lower on-year shipments due to government export restrictions signify a loss in valuable foreign exchange earnings, the association observes.

Semi-finished steel exports fell -12% in the period to 4.48mt, driven by a -33% slump in slab shipments to 1.28mt, while billet exports dropped -2% to 3.49mt.

Nine-month finished steel exports fell -27% to 1.98mt, of which long products comprised 1.51mt. Rebar exports slumped -30%, ISPA says without providing a tonnage. Flats exports fell -28% to 471,000t.

Exports of direct reduced iron meanwhile dropped -45% to 453,000t.

Despite the lower exports and weak domestic consumption, Iranian finished steel output rose 10% on-year in the nine months to 10.61mt (see Kallanish passim).
