Thailand's Siam Construction Steel Company, a subsidiary of Tata Steel (Thailand), has commissioned an 80-tonne electric arc furnace at its Rayong steel plant, Kallanish notes from equipment supplier SMS.
The EAF was upgraded by SMS in ten months starting from October 2019. SMS supplied a new “CONDOOR” slag door and advanced electrode regulator to the Thai steelmaker.
The purpose of the upgrade is to improve the tightness of the furnace, thereby increasing productivity. The new electrode regulator is capable of automatically regulating the injection of carbon with less energy and, at the same time, significantly lowering electrode consumption.
The modernisation reduced specific energy consumption by -2.5% and increased production yield by 0.3%. In addition, iron oxide content in the slag could be decreased by -10%, according to SMS.
