Hebei Iron and Steel Group (HBIS)’s Chengde Iron and Steel (Chenggang) has resumed the operation of its No.5 blast furnace after maintenance. The unit is a 2,500 cubic metre blast furnace for vanadium-bearing titano-magnetite, Kallanish notes.
Chenggang’s No.5 blast furnace was put into operation on 1 December 2006, and was shut down for an overhaul on 20 February 2020. It is the world's first and largest vanadium-bearing titano-magnetite blast furnace. During its over-13-year operation, it had a total output of 22.58 million tonnes of iron. The overhaul took place at the HBIS Plant in Chengde, Hebei Province. The No.5 blast furnace is expected to work for more than ten years after the overhaul.
HBIS, the largest steel group in China, is formed of Tanggang and Handan Iron and Steel. It consists of 13 subsidiaries, including Tanggang, Handan Steel, Cheng Steel, and has a total output of 40.24m t/year of steel. Founded in 1954, Cheng Steel has a capacity of 8m t/y of steel, 20,000 t/y of vanadium products, and 60,000 t/y of ilmenite.
