JSW Steel’s Dolvi Steel Plant Expansion Nears Completion

The expansion works at JSW Steel’s Dolvi Works plant is expected to be completed by March next year.

The steel plant in that state of Maharashtra in western India has a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The investment of approximately INR 15,000 crore is aimed at doubling the plant’s capacity to nearly 10 mtpa, said Jayant Acharya, Director-Commercial Marketing and Corporate Strategy, JSW Steel.

The expansion works were affected by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The company was forced to suspend works, on account of multiple reasons including workplace and travel restrictions. It had received government approval to restart the works only towards end-April this year. The expansion works would have completed earlier than this, except for the Covid-19-induced delay.

The expansion comprises of installation of a 4.5 mtpa blast furnace, along with a steel melt shop and hot strip mill, each of 5 mtpa capacities. In addition, the plant will have an 8 mtpa pellet plant and four kilns of lime calcinations plants and a captive plant. The completion of the expansion project will lift JSW Steel’s total steelmaking capacity to 23.1 mtpa.

The company press release stated that almost 95% work in connection with the expansion project has been completed already.
