August world crude steel production up 0.6%

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 156.2Mt in August 2020, a 0.6% increase compared to August 2019.

Due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, many of this month’s figures are estimates that may be revised with next month’s production update.

China produced 94.8Mt of crude steel in August 2020, an increase of 8.4% compared to August 2019. India produced 8.5Mt, down 4.4% on last year's figure, while Japan produced 6.4 Mt, down 20.6%.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, crude steel production for August 2020 was 5.8Mt, down by 1.8% compared with the same period last year.

Germany produced 2.8Mt of crude steel in August 2020, down 13.4% on last year; Italy produced 0.9Mt, up 9.7%, France produced 0.7Mt, down 31.2%, and Spain’s crude steel production for August 2020 was down 32.5% at 0.7Mt.

The United States produced 5.6Mt of crude steel in August 2020, a decrease of 24.4% while production in the CIS is estimated to be 7.9Mt, down by 6.2%. The Ukraine produced 1.8 Mt of crude steel in August 2020, down 5.7% the previous year.

The Brazilian steel industry produced 2.7Mt of crude steel, an increase of 6.5% when compared with August 2019 figures.

Last, but not least, Turkey’s crude steel production for August 2020 up 22.9% at 3.2Mt.
