Japan's ferrous scrap exports slide in Aug m-o-m

Posted on 05 October 2021

According to statistics, Japan’s ferrous scrap exports totaled around 545,300 tons in August this year, sliding by 8.8% compared to the previous month, which was the decrease for the second month in a row.

Among them, the exports to South Korea accounted for the largest proportion, 69% of the total volume, totaling around 374,000 tons, a month-on-month increase of nearly 21%, hitting the highest since March 2019.

However, the exports to other countries, such as Vietnam, Taiwan, and China, didn’t perform well as before due to lower demand and prices short of competitiveness.

The month-on-month decrease in Japan’s August scrap exports was because the overseas demand decreased and Japan’s scrap exporters gave priority to the domestic demand during the period.
