China’s steel export to ASEAN-6 in the first half of 2017

China’s total steel export to the world reduced substantially in the first half of 2017, by 28% y-o-y. This was mainly the result of a significant decline in the export of long products. 
 
In the same period, China’s finished steel export to ASEAN-6 i.e., Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, dropped even more, by 40% y-o-y to 11.7 million tonnes.
 
China’s export of section to ASEAN-6 dropped by 40% y-o-y to 526,590 tonnes in the first six months of 2017. Vietnam was the largest destination of China’s export of section in ASEAN-6 with a volume of 175,036 tonnes in the first half of 2017, a drop by half compared to the corresponding period of 2016. The other major export destinations were Philippines (131,131 tonnes) and Malaysia (120,521 tonnes). 
 
China’s export of bar in the first half of 2017 reduced by more than one third in volume from the same period in 2016, to 2.2 million tonnes. Export to Indonesia dropped from nearly 2 million tonnes in the first half of 2016 to less than 600,000 tonnes in the same period of 2017. Export to Malaysia also declined significantly, by 73% y-o-y to 173,000 tonnes. 
 
Export to Philippines contracted by one third to 580,047 tonnes while export to Singapore dropped by 26% y-o-y to 552,981 tonnes in the same period of 2017. 
Export to Thailand dropped even more, from 1.9 million tonnes in the first half of 2016 to 227,730 tonnes in the first half of 2017. Meanwhile, export to Vietnam dropped by 81% y-o-y to 123,666 tonnes in the same period of 2017. 
 
Wire rod export from China to ASEAN-6 dropped by a million tonnes, from 2.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2016 to 1.6 million tonnes in the same period of 2017. Vietnam was the largest destination among the ASEAN-6 countries for wire rod export from China. However, the volume declined significantly, from 752,605 tonnes in the first half of 2016 to 417,607 tonnes in the same period of 2017. 
 
China’s wire rod export to Thailand was also significant in 2016. However, the volume dropped sharply, by 34% y-o-y to less than 400,000 tonnes in the first half of 2017. Export to Philippines also declined but at lower rate, compared to other countries in the region, at 18% y-o-y to 382,429 tonnes in the same period of 2017. 
 
Export to Indonesia dropped from 307,720 tonnes from January to June 2016 to 201,470 tonnes in the same period of 2017. China’s export of wire rod to Malaysia declined by more than half to 119,769 tonnes in the first half of 2017, followed by the volume to Singapore at 84,459 tonnes, a decrease of 51.6% y-o-y. 
 
China’s export of flat steel to ASEAN-6 in the first half of 2017 showed declines for some products while others increased. Export of plates dropped from 1.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2016 to a million tonnes in the same period of 2017. Vietnam was the largest destination for China’s export of plates in the region (a share of 70% of total export to ASEAN-6). The volume, however, decreased by half to 587,598 tonnes in the first half of 2017. 
 
Export to Thailand also dropped significantly, by 42% y-o-y to 91,491 tonnes in the same period of 2017. Export to Singapore also declined substantially, by almost half to 59,637 tonnes in the first half of 2017. 
 
China’s export of plates to Indonesia and Malaysia was not significant. However, the volume doubled to 36,052 tonnes and 73,538 tonnes, respectively. 
 
Hot rolled coil import from China to ASEAN slowed down from a significant increase of 30% y-o-y from January to June 2016 to a small increase of only 2% y-o-y in the same period of 2017. Vietnam was the largest destination for China’s HRC total export (a share of 25% of total export and 74% of the export to ASEAN-6). The volume, however, declined moderately, by 8% y-o-y to 1.9 million tonnes in the first half of 2017. 
 
Export to Singapore was not significant and the volume contracted slightly to 4,282 tonnes in the same period. Export volume to Malaysia remained relatively unchanged, at 105,273 tonnes, while export to other countries in the region increased during the same period. 
 
Export of cold rolled coil, on the other hand, increased significantly, by 60% y-o-y to 640,051 tonnes in the first half of 2017. Among the ASEAN-6 countries, China’s export to Vietnam in the first six months of 2017 registered the largest volume, at 287,272 tonnes, doubled in volume when compared to the same period of 2016. Export to Philippines increased moderately, by 10% y-o-y to 164,566 tonnes in the first half of 2017. Export to Malaysia registered 81,445 tonnes in the same period, an increase of 35.7% y-o-y. 
 
Export to Indonesia in the first half of 2017 was not significant but the volume doubled to 57,123 tonnes. Export to Thailand stagnated at 32,432 tonnes while export volume to Singapore was not significant during the same period of 2017. 
 
China’s export of hot dipped galvanized sheet for the period January to June 2017 decreased substantially, by 30% y-o-y to 925,464 tonnes. Export to Vietnam, the largest destination among the ASEAN-6 countries, dropped by half to 360,244 tonnes. Export to Thailand dropped by 23% y-o-y to 228,900 tonnes, followed by the export to Philippines, at 214,053 tonnes, a decline of 12.6% y-o-y. Export to the other countries in ASEAN-6 was not significant. 
 
Export of electro galvanized sheet (EG) increased sharply in the first half of 2017. Although the volume at 21,758 tonnes, was not significant, it was almost a double surge in volume when compared to the same period of 2016. 
 
Export of pipes and tubes (seamless pipes and welded pipes) from China to ASEAN-6 declined by 21.7% y-o-y in the first half of 2017. Philippines was the largest destination for pipes & tubes export from China, among the 6 ASEAN countries. The volume increased slightly by 1% y-o-y to 184,696 tonnes in the first half of 2017. Export to Malaysia increased 19.4% y-o-y to 114,740 tonnes in the same period. Export to Singapore surged moderately, by 4.4% y-o-y, to nearly 100,000 tonnes in the first half of 2017. 
 

Export to Thailand reduced sharply, from 236,476 tonnes in the first half of 2016 to 86,524 tonnes in the same period of 2017. Export to Indonesia also registered a significant decrease, by 33% y-o-y to 87,232 tonnes from January to June 2017. Export to Vietnam also registered a double digit drop of 14.6% y-o-y to 91,159 tonnes in the same period.
