As we step into the New Year, I would like to highlight some of the important events and activities of SEAISI in 2017.

The first major event of the year for the Institute is the 2017 Travelling Seminar. This year’s seminar, with the theme “Innovative Approaches in Process Automation and Quality Assurance”, will take place earlier than usual, from 27 February to 8 March 2017. The cities covered are Bangkok, Thailand (27 February); Jakarta, Indonesia (1 March); Manila, Philippines (3 March); Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (6 March); and Shah Alam, Malaysia (8 March). Speakers will come from OneSteel of Australia, Kobe Steel of Japan, POSCO of South Korea and Dragon Steel Corporation of Taiwan.

The most important event of the Institute this year is of course the 2017 SEAISI Conference and Exhibition, which will be held in Singapore. The event, to be organised at Resorts World Sentosa Singapore, will be held on 22 to 25 May 2017. The theme of the conference is “Realising the Value within ASEAN Steel Industry through Technology Development, Capacity Optimisation and Digitisation”.

As in previous years, several prominent personalities from the steel industry will be invited to deliver keynote speeches on the opening day of the conference. The confirmed keynote speakers so far are Mr. Chang In-Hwa, Senior Executive Vice President cum Chief Technology Officer of POSCO and Mr. Kazuhiro Egawa, Managing Executive Officer, South East Asia & India, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation.  After the keynote speeches, the keynote speakers will be joined by several Board members of SEAISI for a CEO panel discussion.

Other than the keynote presentations and panel discussion, there will also be several interesting sessions dwelling on the status and issues and challenges of the steel industry in the region and beyond. We will also have the usual technical sessions on many important topics of interest to the steel fraternity.

For the plant tour, visits will be arranged to prominent steel and steel related establishments in Singapore as well as across the causeway in Johor, Malaysia.

In conjunction with the conference, a technical training course on “Automation – Basics & Solutions within a Steel Plant” will be organised on 21 May 2017. The training will be conducted by Mr. Alexander Vogel, an automation expert at Badische Stahl-Engineering GmbH (BSE).

The 2017 SEAISI Training Programme will be conducted in Japan and is organised by The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF). The programme is expected to take place in the later part of this year.

The year-end event of the Institute, the 2017 ASEAN Iron and Steel Sustainability Forum, will be held in the Philippines in the month of November.

In addition to the above, the ASEAN Iron and Steel Council (AISC), which functions under the umbrella of SEAISI, is expected to have a busy year in 2017. It will continue to focus on the perennial problem of the regional steelmakers and that is unfair competition from the influx of low-priced steel exports.  In this connection, the Council will intensify its effort in engaging with various key stakeholders to find a long term solution to the problem.  It also plans to expand its engagement with several regional steel groupings to share information and to explore areas for collaboration.

2017 promises to be an interesting and challenging year for SEAISI. We hope all members will continue to support and participate in the events and activities of the Institute.
