Effect of Process Design and Operation of Laminar Cooling on Thermal and Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Properties

Posted on 28 January 2014
Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa Inc. updated its drivetrain system of the upcoiler to include a new AC motor. To accommodate the increase in the torque of the mandrel, the strip tension must be regulated. In order to reduce telescoping at the coil heads, to avoid acceleration after the tailout and to minimize loose wraps, a tension model for wide, heavygauge coils has been established.

By means of this tension model, a wide, heavy-gauge strip with 50-ksi yield strength was
coiled successfully.
