Lebanese imports of bar under HS code heading 7214 slumped -37% on-year in September to 34,248 tonnes, according to Lebanese Customs data monitored by Kallanish. Imports in the nine months through September fell by the same rate to 314,330t. This gave a monthly average of 34,926t versus 53,753t in full-year 2018.
Rebar accounted for 279,412t of nine-month imports, with an average value of $482/tonne. This compares to a full-year 2018 tonnage of 595,162t and price of $555/t. Ukraine and Turkey supplied 90,732t and 73,129t of rebar respectively. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran supplied 38,732t, 30,006t and 29,498t respectively.
Imports of hot rolled flat products under HS code heading 7208 fell -58% in September to 5,194t. Nine month-imports were down only -1% to 94,211t. This gave a monthly average of 10,386t versus 12,118t in full-year 2018.
Lebanon also imported 51,227t of coated flat steel in January-September, down -35%. China was by far the main supplier with 19,554t.
Lebanese nine-month scrap exports, meanwhile, slumped -46% to 217,139t. The main export market was Greece with 122,041t, followed by Egypt with 83,363t. By far the largest buyer in full-year 2018, Turkey, did not procure any scrap from Lebanon in January-September.
