Analysis of Steel Import and Export in ASEAN Member Countries in 2017

  • Indonesia’s finished steel import increased slightly, by 2.8% y-o-y. Long steel import, however, declined 7.8% y-o-y to 1.7 million tonnes in 2017. Flat steel import increased by 6.8% y-o-y to 5.3 million tonnes in the same period. Import of hot rolled plate surged significantly, by 31.4% y-o-y to 266,690 tonnes in 2017. Import of hot rolled coil also registered a double-digit growth rate of 12% y-o-y to 1.88 million tonnes. Import of cold rolled coil also continued to increase, at 23.3% y-o-y to 1.7 million tonnes in 2017. However, import of coated sheet and pipes & tubes declined.
  • Indonesia’s export nearly doubled in volume to 1.3 million tonnes in 2017. This was due to the huge increase of export for both long and flat steel. Indonesia’s long product export was not significant since the country has not been exporting long steel in previous years. However, bar export registered a significant increase of 44% y-o-y to 52,604 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations for bar export were Australia and Myanmar.
  • Section export jumped 21% y-o-y to 13,542 tonnes and wire rod export increased 14% y-o-y to 63,814 tonnes. Major destinations for section export were Australia and Singapore while major destinations for wire rod export were Australia, Malaysia and Philippines.
  • Indonesia’s export of hot rolled plate increased 32% y-o-y to nearly 500,000 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations of hot rolled plate export were India, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil and Italy. Export of hot rolled coil jumped by more than three folds to 340,681 tonnes in 2017. The bulk of the hot rolled coil export was to China, at 273,167 tonnes, while there was no record of hot rolled coil export to China for the last ten years.
  • Export of cold rolled coil was not significant, but the volume increased 12.5% y-o-y to 57,099 tonnes in 2017. Indonesia exported cold rolled coil to many countries, such as USA, Italy, India, Spain etc.
  •  Export of coated sheet increased moderately, by 4.2% y-o-y. This was mainly due to the sharp increase in the export of Zn-Al coated sheet, at 41% y-o-y to 14,927 tonnes in 2017, while export of other products in coated sheet category declined. 
  • Malaysia’s finished steel import declined 6% y-o-y to 7.07 million tonnes in 2017 while export registered a significant increase of 32% y-o-y to 1.4 million tonnes, a rebound in volume to match the 2015 level. This was mainly due to a significant increase in flat export, at 42% y-o-y to 1.15 million tonnes. However, the volume was still lower than the levels in 2014 and 2015. 
  • Export of hot rolled plate almost doubled in volume to 87,032 tonnes in 2017. Export to Philippines registered a significant volume for the first time, at 44,555 tonnes in 2017, followed by export to Thailand and Indonesia. 
  • Export of hot rolled coil increased 36% y-o-y to 42,517 tonnes in 2017. Nearly half of the export was to Thailand, while export to other countries was minimum. 
  • Export of cold rolled coil increased moderately, by 8.3% y-o-y to 300,535 tonnes in 2017. Malaysia exported cold rolled coil to various countries, such as Indonesia, India, Thailand, Turkey and Italy etc. Export of coated sheet increased 15.6% y-o-y to 279,922 tonnes. Major destinations were USA, Thailand and Indonesia. Malaysia used to export a significant volume of pipes & tubes. The highest volume was in 2014, at 1.1 million tonnes. However, the export volume declined after that and dropped to a low of 245,827 tonnes in 2016. The volume picked up to 467,676 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations were Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Brunei. 
  • Philippines’ import of finished steel increased slightly, by 3.5% y-o-y to 5.6 million tonnes in 2017. Steel export was negligible, with only 100,000 tonnes of welded pipe export in 2017. Long steel import surged slightly, by 2% y-o-y. This was due to the significant increase of bar import, at 35% y-o-y to 109,857 tonnes while import of section and wire rod declined. 
  • Flat steel import, on other hand, showed a significant increase. Import of hot rolled plate registered an increase of 21.2% y-o-y to 963,369 tonnes in 2017 and import of hot rolled coil registered a similar growth rate of 23% y-o-y to 551,419 tonnes in the same period.  
  • Import of cold rolled coil and coated sheet, on the other hand, declined. 
  • Singapore’s import of finished steel decreased substantially, by 15% y-o-y to 3.45 million tonnes. Export dropped 29% y-o-y to 1.26 million tonnes in the same period. 
  • Long steel import declined 15% y-o-y to 2.2 million tonnes in 2017. This was mainly due to a decline in section and bar import, at 36% y-o-y and 19% y-o-y respectively, while import of wire rod increased 10% y-o-y to 276,929 tonnes. Major source of wire rod import was China. 
  • Flat steel import in Singapore also decreased 15% y-o-y to 1.26 million tonnes in 2017. Most of flat steel products import declined significantly, except cold rolled sheet import, which increased 5.4% y-o-y to 246,412 tonnes in 2017. Major sources of cold rolled import were Japan, China, Taiwan and Vietnam. 
  • Thailand’s import of finished steel declined by a double digit of 11.2% y-o-y to 10.9 million tonnes in 2017. Export, on other hand, increased 22% y-o-y to 1.32 million tonnes in the same period. 
  • Import of long steel dropped significantly, by 21% y-o-y to 2.2 million tonnes in 2017. Section import in Thailand registered only 19,955 tonnes in 2017, which was a sharp decline from 99,671 tonnes in 2016. Section import from China dropped sharply, from 80,481 tonnes in 2016 to only 4,845 tonnes in 2017. 
  • Bar import dropped 11.8% y-o-y to 633,865 tonnes while wire rod import decreased 23% y-o-y to 1.3 million tonnes in 2017. Major sources of bar import were China, Japan and South Korea while major sources for wire rod import were China, Japan, France, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam. 
  • Flat steel import in Thailand declined 8% y-o-y to 8.7 million tonnes in 2017. Most of flat steel import declined, except import of cold rolled sheet. Cold rolled import registered 1.57 million tonnes, an increase of 24% y-o-y in 2017. Meanwhile, import of hot rolled plate and hot rolled coil registered double digit negative growth rates of 11% and 17% respectively. 
  • Major sources of most of the flat steel products import in Thailand were Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.
  • Thailand’s finished steel export increased significantly, with most of the steel products registering double digit growth rates in 2017. Export of long steel increased 14.4% y-o-y to 694,032 tonnes in 2017 and export of flat steel increased 32% y-o-y to 625,430 tonnes in the same period. 
  • Thailand was a net exporter of section for many years and major destinations were ASEAN countries. However, the export volume declined 8% y-o-y to 277,212 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations still remained ASEAN countries. Bar export did not change much with a slight decline of 2.3% y-o-y to 193,331 tonnes in 2017. 
  • Thailand’s export of wire rod was not significant. However, the volume jumped by three folds to 15,408 tonnes in 2017. 
  • Export of hot rolled plate and coil was not significant but the volume declined significantly. However, export of cold rolled coil increased by 26% y-o-y to 196,041 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations of cold rolled coil export from Thailand include USA, South Korea, Italy and Indonesia. Export of coated sheet almost doubled in volume to 219,797 tonnes in the same year. Major destinations were USA, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia. 
  • Vietnam’s finished steel import declined significantly, by 14% y-o-y to 15 million tonnes in 2017. On the other hand, export rose by a million tonnes to 4.69 million tonnes in the same period.
  • Long steel production continued to increase, by 14.6% y-o-y to 9.9 million tonnes in 2017. However, import dropped sharply, by 32.5% y-o-y to 2.03 million tonnes in the same period. Export rose significantly, from 901,000 tonnes in 2016 to 1.2 million tonnes in 2017. 
  • The huge increase of long steel export in Vietnam was contributed mainly by the export of bar and wire rod, which rose 38.5% y-o-y and 53.6% y-o-y respectively, in 2017. Export of section increased 16% y-o-y to 361,000 tonnes in 2017. The ASEAN-5 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand), however, did not show any record of significant volumes of long steel import from Vietnam.
  • Vietnam’s Formosa Ha Thinh launched its hot rolled coil production and recorded a volume of 1.38 million tonnes in 2017. Following that, Vietnam’s flat steel import declined 10% y-o-y to 13 million tonnes in 2017. Export, on the other hand, surged significantly, by 21% y-o-y to 2.47 million tonnes in the same period. 
  • Exports of hot rolled coil and plate from Vietnam, in particular, surged sharply, at 264% y-o-y and 108% y-o-y respectively, in 2017. Major destinations of hot rolled coil export from Vietnam were Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. However, there was no record of import of hot rolled plate from Vietnam in the five countries in ASEAN.
  • Export of cold rolled coil, on the other hand, dropped by 12% y-o-y to 719,000 tonnes in 2017. Export of coated sheet increased 23% y-o-y to 1.78 million tonnes in the same period. 
 
Noted: There is no access to trade data for Vietnam and Philippines. Therefore, the analysis on sources of import and destinations of export were based on mirror statistics.
