The 2017 SEAISI Conference and Exhibition in Singapore promises to be a special event not to be missed for the steel industry professionals. With the theme “Realising the Value within ASEAN Steel Industry through Technology Development, Capacity Optimisation and Digitisation”, the event will be held at the Resorts World Sentosa from 22 to 25 May 2017.
 
One of the highlights of the conference is the Keynote Session on the opening day which will feature presentations by several prominent keynote speakers as well as a CEO panel discussion. The keynote speakers are Mr. Peeyush Gupta, Vice President (Steel Marketing & Sales), Tata Steel Limited; Mr. Yoichi Furuta, Managing Executive Officer, South East Asia & India, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation; and Mr. Kwak Jeong Shik, Executive Vice President, Head of External Relations, POSCO. After the keynote presentations, the three speakers will participate in a CEO panel discussion on “Realising the Value within ASEAN Steel Industry”. Joining the panel discussion will be a couple of prominent steel industry players from the ASEAN region.

The opening day of the conference will also feature two general sessions. The first session will cover Regional Developments in which I will present a report on the Performance of the ASEAN Iron and Steel Industry in 2016 and Outlook. In the same session, Mr. Keith Tan of Platts will talk about Chinese Industrial Policy (Capacity Cuts) and its Impact on the Steel Markets while Dr. Ahmed S Firoz of the Ministry of Steel of India will examine India Steel Industry: Strategic Options. 

The second session on Market Perspectives & Challenges will see four interesting presentations on topics relating to steel prices, steelmaking raw materials and Industry 4.0. They are “Regional Steel Price Trends within a Global Environment” by MEPS; “Developments in Steelmaking Raw Materials Markets and the Impact of Chinese Environmental Measures on Southeast Asian Steel Industry” by MySteel; “The Future for Chinese Steel: Steel Prices and Influencing Factors” by CRU; and “How Can Industry 4.0 & Industrial IoT Help ASEAN Steel Compete in Today’s Tough Years” by PSI Metals.

As in the past, there will also be the presentation of Country Reports which will provide an opportunity for the delegates to be updated on the status and outlook of the iron and steel industry in the respective SEAISI member countries.

The Technical Sessions on days two and three will feature many informative papers covering such topics as New Technologies, Product Developments, Process Improvement, Quality Improvement, Technology Developments, Environmental Management, Plant Management, Raw Materials, New Steel Applications, Energy Savings and Cost Reduction. A sample of some of the interesting papers include “The Impact of Digitalisation on the Steel Industry – A Plant Engineering Point of View”; “Integrated Decision Optimisation – Drive towards Improved Cost Competitiveness in a Steel Industry 4.0 Era’; “The Value of Energy and Resources – Towards an Efficient Future in Steelmaking”; “Induction versus Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Process: Advantages & Disadvantages”; and “Metal Powder – the Raw Material of Future Production”.

The Plant Tour on day four will offer delegates the choice of visiting several interesting steel and steel related establishments in Singapore or across the causeway in Johor, Malaysia.

In Singapore, delegates will have the opportunity to visit Yongnam Holdings Limited, a leading steel fabricator in the republic and The Accenture Internet of Things Centre of Excellence, which helps companies capitalise on technology innovations and drive performance across the value chain.

For those who opt to travel to Johor, they will have the rare opportunity of visiting two leading international steel facilities there. They are the stainless steel factory of Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Acerinox Group and Nisshin Steel; and the specialty wires factory of Kiswire of Korea.
