Update on China's steel exports to ASEAN

China's finished steel export to the world rose by 37% y-o-y in the first seven months of 2014, a dramatic increase when compared to the growth rate of 12% y-o-y in 2013. Total finished steel export to ASEAN accounted for 24.5% of China's finished steel export in the first seven months of 2014.

Export of bar to ASEAN for the period January to July 2014 increased substantially, by 90% y-o-y to 3 million tonnes. Export to Singapore registered the highest volume of 632,000 tonnes, followed by export to the Philippines and Indonesia, at 573,000 tonnes and 288,000 tonnes, respectively.

Export of section declined moderately by 5% y-o-y to 872,000 tonnes in the first seven months of 2014, compared to the significant growth rate of 25% y-o-y in 2013. The major destinations of the section export to ASEAN were Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. Section export to Indonesia declined 12% y-o-y in the first seven months of 2014. Similarly, section export to Malaysia and Singapore also registered declines of 1.2% y-o-y and 37% y-o-y, respectively. However, export to Vietnam, at 239,000 tonnes, was an increase of 24% y-o-y.

China's export of wire rod to ASEAN in the first seven months of 2014 continued to surge at 21% y-o-y, albeit at a slower growth when compared to the 51% y-o-y growth registered in 2013. Nearly half of the total wire rod export to ASEAN was delivered to Thailand (704,000 tonnes), followed by the export to Vietnam, at 559,000 tonnes in the same period.

Export of hot rolled coil to ASEAN jumped substantially by 46% y-o-y, to 1.7 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2014. Export to Vietnam registered the highest volume of1.175 million tonnes, followed by the export to Thailand, at 188,000 tonnes and Philippines, at 176,000 tonnes.

For the period January to July 2014, export of cold rolled coil was less significant, at 485,000 tonnes, an increase of 17.3% y-o-y.

Export of coated steel to ASEAN registered significant volumes in the first seven months of 2014. Export of hot dipped galvanized sheet was 632,000 tonnes, a moderate decline of 5% y-o-y. Export to the Philippines registered the highest volume in ASEAN, at 201,000 tonnes, a significant increase of 35% y-o-y. Meanwhile, exports to the other countries in ASEAN declined.

Export of color coated sheet registered 485,000 tonnes, an increase of 17% y-o-y in the first seven months in 2014. Major destinations in ASEAN were the Philippines (120,000 tonnes), Vietnam (101,000 tonnes), Singapore (100,000 tonnes) and Thailand (80,390 tonnes).

Export of pipes & tubes from China to ASEAN rose significantly, by 13% y-o-y to 830,000 tonnes in the first seven months of 2014, compared to a decline of 5% y-o-y in 2013. Nearly 60% of the export was seamless pipes.
