Steel Prices in China

Long steel

  • The average price of 6.5mm Q235 high speed wire rod and 20mm HRB400 rebar fell by 7 yuan per tonne from the previous trading day to 2,968 yuan per tonne and 2,944 yuan per tonne respectively on Thursday – source: SteelHome

  • In China, mesh-quality wire rod for October shipment was traded at $420-445 per tonne fob, tightening downwards by $5 per tonne over the same period – source: MB


Flat steel

  • The average price of 2.75mm HRC in China market dropped by 10 yuan per tonne from the previous trading day to 3,305 yuan per tonne on Thursday; and price for 1.0mm CRC declined by 5 yuan per tonne to 4,046 yuan per tonne – source: SteelHome

  • The average price of 8mm medium plate in China market reached 3,504 yuan per tonne on Thursday, down 7 yuan per tonne from the previous trading day – source: SteelHome

  • In Shanghai, domestic commercial-grade 14-20mm plate was traded at 3,060-3,080 yuan ($497-500) per tonne including VAT on Wednesday, down 80 yuan per tonne on the week – source: MB


Steel Prices in Other Countries



  • The scrap price index dropped by $1.32 to close at $371.92 per tonne cfr on Wednesday September 17. Metal Bulletin's index for Northern Europe-origin HMS 1&2 (80:20) scrap closed at $361.85 per tonne cfr, $1.26 lower day-on-day – source: MB

  • A steel mill in Turkey's Izmir region booked a USA cargo, comprising 13,000 tonnes of HMS 1&2 (80:20) at $371.50 per tonne cfr, 12,000 tonnes of shredded at $376.50 per tonne cfr, as well as 2,000 tonnes of P&S (plate and structural) at $381.50 per tonne cfr – source: MB


  • A re-roller in Turkey reported offers billet prices at $500-510/mt CIF Turkey, but also noted that a $490/mt CIF Turkey offer was also received this week for delivery in December – source: Platts

  • On Wednesday the daily Platts assessment for billet price was down a further $1.50/mt to $502.50/mt on the back of weaker sentiment and low bids in the market – source: Platts

Bar/Wire rod

  • One trader said Turkish mills cut prices $10/mt to $595/mt CFR Houston after the US Department of Commerce made a negative determination in the dumping investigation of Turkish imports last Tuesday – source: Platts



  • On Wednesday September 17, Steel First's price assessment for commodity-grade heavy plate (8-40 mm) in Northern Europe went up by €10 ($13) to €510-530 ($660-686), while it remained stable at €490-500 ($634-647) per tonne in Southern Europe – source: MB

  • Sources said average prices for Japanese re-rolling grade HRC for the re-rollers for August were around $570-575/mt FOB – source: Platts
