China’s export of hot rolled steel products nearly doubled in volume in 2010 when compared to 2009. This was due mainly to the robust increase in the second quarter of 2010 before slowing down in the second half of the year. The export volume remained buoyant in the first two quarters of 2011, but total volume registered a decline of 20% when compared to the same period of 2010.

Export of section remained steady in 2010 but saw a slight decline in the first six months of 2011. Meanwhile, export of bar and wire rod in the first six months of 2011 increased by 28% and 15% to 1.8 million tonnes and 1.5 million tonnes, respectively. Around 30% of China’s section export went to ASEAN. China’s export of bar to ASEAN accounted for 10% of its total export volume. Export to Thailand doubled in volume from January to June 2011, when compared to the same period of 2010.

Hot rolled carbon coil/sheet export from China reduced substantially in the first six months of 2011, from nearly a million tonnes in 2010 to 22,000 tonnes in 2011. Export to ASEAN represented half of the total export volume. Export of hot rolled alloy coil/sheet, on the other hand, registered a huge increase, from 23,000 tonnes in the first six months of 2010 to nearly 600,000 tonnes in the same period of 2011. Export of hot rolled alloy coil/sheet to Philippines registered 80,000 tonnes in the first six months of 2011, compared to 13,000 tonnes in the same period of 2010.
