One dead in blast at AK's Ashland coke plant

A maintenance contractor employee working at AK Steel Corp.'s Ashland, Ky., coke plant suffered fatal injuries shortly before noon Thursday, when an explosion and subsequent fire occurred in a portion of the byproducts area of the cokemaking facility.

A maintenance contractor employee working at AK Steel Corp.'s Ashland, Ky., coke plant suffered fatal injuries shortly before noon Thursday, when an explosion and subsequent fire occurred in a portion of the byproducts area of the cokemaking facility.

 

Area emergency providers responded to the scene and extinguished the fire, West Chester, Ohio-based AK Steel said in a statement. AK said it has temporarily ceased coke production at the plant while it determines the extent of the damage.
